According to specific statistics and research, between 5 and 15% of healthy people can be suffering from SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Moreover, 8 out of 10 individuals who experience irritable bowel syndrome suffer from SIBO as well. People who have bowel problems experience flatulence and discomfort regardless of the food they consume.

What is SIBO?

This term is used to describe excessive bacteria growth inside the small intestine. The level of bacteria is lowered when the stomach functions properly. The food travels through the digestive tract and enters the small intestines where it dissolves into smaller pieces and this is where the nutrients are absorbed. Afterwards, the food enters the colon, where it is more susceptible to bacteria, absorbs the water and the concentrates, and prepares the rest of the food for bowel movement. People, who experience SIBO, usually have a high level of bacteria in the small intestines. If everything is in order, these bacteria should not be present in the colon. Excessive bacterial growth occurs when the bacterium feeds on food in the small intestines before it is released and before the nutrients are absorbed. This leads to pain, flatulence, constipation, gasses, and diarrhea. Furthermore, excessive bacterial growth can cause an inflammation which negatively affects the layers of the small intestine.

Which are the reasons for SIBO?

There are several factors that may lead to this condition such as birth control pills, antibiotics, alcohol, antacid, and lack of stomach acid.

SIBO diagnosis

Diagnosis of SIBO is done with the help of breath test which estimates the amount of methane and hydrogen gas produced by the bacteria that has diffused into the blood, and then the lungs, for expiration.

How to cope with SIBO?

In order to solve this condition you must find the right way to solve the excessive bacteria growth that occurs in this part of the digestive tract. Of course, there are a lot of medicines for alleviation of this condition, but they are filled with chemicals. In fact, you only need Allicin which can be found in natural products such as garlic, oregano, berberine, olive oil extract, and other similar plants with similar anti microbial properties. You can also use supplements and special enzymes to weaken the defensive mechanism of bacteria. Diet change is always a good start. You can try the FODMAP diet based on small amounts of fermentable ingredients recommended by many people. Another choice may be the SIBO diet. After every treatment you undergo, be sure to make another breath test in order to check the bacteria level. Additionally, the L-glutamine protein is a great supplement for people suffering from SIBO.

This condition can often times reoccur in patients who managed to treat it, therefore practice healthy habits and avoid things that can lead to SIBO.
